After I took a look through the Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad’s press kit, I had no idea what to expect from their CD Die Humpin’. After listening to the album one and half times, I now know two things – these guys have a great sense of humor, and they are good musicians.

Die Humpin’ is hilarious, plain and simple. You can tell that even after you listen to only the first track, Imma Pilot, which contains a dueling guitar solo and kazoo solo. The guitar riffing on this track is out of this world, and the kazoo, well let’s just say it works somehow. There was not one point throughout this record where I wasn’t laughing or getting ready to laugh. The lyrics are funny, yet insightful. The lyrics shine through on tracks like You’re Too Skinny, If There Ain’t No Poon In Heaven and Lone Wolf & Cub.

The music is another story however. No matter what type of music you are into, TDMFS has you covered with Die Humpin’, with rock, bluegrass, indie, pop, rap, punk, folk and so on and so forth. Normally you would think that the transition from genre to genre would make the music sound irrelevant, but that sediment couldn’t be further from the truth. The guitars are precise and piercing throughout, and the drumming is strong. The vocals are what sell this record and they are what keep you interested from track to track. At all times TDMFS is hilarious, and sometimes could be considered offensive on tracks like George W. Makes Me Bleed, I Wish I Was a Black Man and Don’t Let Jesus Ruin Your Day. The lyrics and the vocals are not overtly offense, but could be misconstrued as such.

The best two tracks of the record are coincidentally the two catchiest songs; You’re Too Skinny and Lone Wolf & Cub. I know it sounds weird but these two tracks are so anthematic that it is hard for me to not sing, and difficult for me to get out of my head.

Let’s put it this way, this record is so funny and good musically that I listened to it three times in a row. It is not too long and dragged out (38 minutes) like a lot of records, and it is catchy enough to grab and hold your attention the whole time it is playing. A lot of records have peaks and valleys, and the valleys usually are where the listener gets bored and loses interest in the music. Die Humpin’ somehow has none of those valleys, at least none that I noticed.

If you want to laugh, and perhaps cry, then listen to Die Humpin'. You might come out of it with a different outlook on life … or maybe not.
